Mâcon Blanc ‘Aux Bois d’Allier’ Christophe Cordier 2022
Christophe Cordier, Pouilly Fuissé, Mâconnais
“White burgundies from Christophe Cordier aren’t from the swankiest appellations but are still some of the best whites in the region.” Tim Atkin MW, The Guardian June 2009
Christophe Cordier is a multi-talented winemaker. After establishing the 30ha family domaine as one of the true beacons of quality in the region, he started a small négoce business, sourcing the best grapes locally from some of the finest, oldest vineyards, carefully picked by hand at perfect maturity. Due to his family heritage in the area, he has expert knowledge of the best climats in each village. He prefers to use traditional winemaking techniques in order to produce these classically elegant wines. Christophe works with the greatest respect for the grape and for his own pursuit of excellence. He is a winemaker determined to maximise the terroir diversity and coax out their full potential. He has invested in two superb cellars that handle fruit and wine by gravity alone, both are fully airconditioned and humidity-controlled, and meet the very high standards that he sets himself. In order to carry out high-precision vinifications, he is constantly vigilant whilst also being fully respecting of the integrity of the fruit and its terroir. Christophe only uses indigenous yeasts and ages his wines on their original gross lees to extract as much natural nourishment as possible. Gentle bottling is carried out using gravity, without fining, before the wine undergoes a very light filtration.
Made from low yielding vines which add to the wine’s complexity and concentration, delicious, ripe aromas of peach, citrus and pear that repeat enticingly on the palate with a great intensity. With the 2018 vintage recommended by Decanter Magazine as one of their Best Value Burgundies (November 2018), this medium bodied wine, balanced by the acidity, is a seductive and refreshing effort.
