Malbec, Domaine de Cabrials, Bernard Julian, Languedoc 2022
Domaine de Bachellery, Béziers
Located just outside Béziers to the east, on the Route de Bessan, the historically rich Domaine de Bachellery is owned and run by the Julien family, having taken over the property in the 1980s. This excellent site on the ancient Roman road, the Via Domitia, affords a fine view to the south of the Mediterranean. The vineyards are planted on small rolling hills, of some 70m altitude that run parallel to the sea. The soils are a mix of clay-limestone, as well as gravels and large flat, round stones (galets). Bernard Julien is leading from the front in terms of driving the ambitions and quality of the domaine’s wines. Bernard is one of the most admired vignerons in the region, his vineyards producing an exemplary quality of fruit. The majority of harvesting is carried out at night in order to preserve the freshness and to avoid unwanted oxidation. Temperature control, lees ageing and maturation in tank, as well as oak, all play their part in the fastidious winemaking protocol that Bernard advocates. As the quality continues to be enhanced and refined, the resulting wines offer even greater value, whilst delivering exceptional flavour and texture.
Plums and blackberries accompanied by coffee and earth notes. The tannins are fine and the wine is soft and rounded on the palate.
