Pinotage ‘Weathered Hands’ Dewaldt Heyns, Swartland 2019
Dewaldt Heyns, Paardeberg Valley, Swartland
Dewaldt Heyns is one of the Cape’s most respected winemakers.” Neal Martin, The Wine Advocate November 2015
Dewaldt Heyns, one of the most talented South African winemakers, has achieved his lifelong dream of making wines from the tiny parcel of ancient vines in his father’s 1.1ha vineyards in Paardeberg Valley, Swartland. Inspired by his time spent learning his craft in the Rhône, it is clear to see its ‘Old World’ influence on his wines, especially his Shiraz ‘Weathered Hands’. After graduating from Elsenburg, he began work at Rust en Vrede with Kevin Arnold who, he says, played a significant role in the way he regards wine.
Coming from 40-year-old dry-farmed bush vines in Paardeberg in Swartland, Pinotage ‘Weathered Hands’ Dewaldt Heyns 2012 is gloriously aromatic with intense menthol-tinged dark berry fruits on the nose. Full bodied with ripe tannins and wonderfully concetrated, this shows quite how fantastic Swartland Pinotage can be!
