Ribeiro Blanco Finca Viñoa, Ribeiro 2021
Finca Viñoa, Ribeiro, Avia Valley, Galicia
“This is an up-and-coming project, an unusual winery concept in Ribeiro as the 12ha (30 acres) of terraced vineyards are gathered together in a single estate.” Ferran Centelles, Purple Pages of JancisRobinson.com December 2016
José Gonzalez and his brother Javier have worked hard to restore the extinct 10 hectares of vineyards in the Avia River Valley, in Ribeiro. These vineyards are located in the northernmost part of the Ribeiro DO on a series of twenty dramatic terraces, lying at between 150m and 400m elevation. The terraces themselves are breath-taking – here you will find a combination of the ancient “socalcos” (terraces), as well as some slopes that have called for significant engineering and a great deal of hard graft, in order to rebuild and stabilize them. The resulting wine, based on the indigenous Treixadura variety, is a pure, mineral expression of the granite and slate soils and freshness from this fascinating, magnificent terroir.
Respecting traditional winemaking techniques and using the indigenous grape varietals, Treixadura, Godello, Albariño and Loureira, the brothers, together with winemaker José Manuel Martinez Juste, craft an exceptional dry white wine. Finca Viñoa is produced with utmost care and respect for the integrity of the fruit and the unique site from which it originates. The vinification is pure, clean and free from over manipulation. Maturation on the lees for 4-6 months in stainless steel endows the wine with fine mid-palate richness that offsets perfectly its innate, reverberating vibrancy.
Coming from a blend of grapes indigenous to Ribeiro, it is long and creamy on the palate with captivating aromas of peach and citrus blossom. This exceptional white wine pairs superbly with seafood.
