Description
Rosso di Montepulciano, Cantine Vittorio Innocenti 2018
Vittorio Innocenti, Montefollonico, Tuscany
Vittorio Innocenti gave up teaching philosophy years ago in order to concentrate on his 32-hectare estate based at Montefollonico near Sienna in Tuscany. He is aided by his theatre-historian wife Maria-Rosa and their son Tommaso and together they produce excellent examples of the Sangiovese grape out of their 13th century cellar based in the centre of the town. Made from the traditional Tuscan grapes of Sangiovese, Canaiolo Nero and Mammolo and aged for 6 moths in old oak barrels, the Rosso de Montepulciano is the little brother of Vittorio’s Vino Nobile de Montepulciano, although neither should be confused with the wines from Abruzzo.
Bright ruby red in the glass, with a generous nose of stewed plums, saddle leather. On the palate, full-bodied and complex, with plenty of hot fruit coming through to mingle with flavours of spice, old oak and sun-baked undergrowth. There is a pleasing herby component on the finish, which is long and well balanced.
