Description
Santenay 1er Cru ‘Clos Rousseau’ Domaine Justin Girardin 2019
Justin Girardin, Chassagne Montrachet
A new discovery for us, Domaine Jacques Girardin is very much a family affair. With a winemaking heritage that stretches back to the beginning of the 19th Century, Jacques (brother of Vincent) now runs the 17ha family domaine together with his wife, Valérie, and son Justin. Whilst not being officially certified, Jacques uses many organic techniques as he is passionate about producing wines that express terroir. The results are superbly perfumed, multi-layered wines.
The name Maladière comes from the nearby Maladière of Chagny hospital. This is a sunny, warm site, its wines typically spicier, with darker berries. It is a south-east facing vineyard, with deeper soils, located in the centre of the appellation. Justin has 0.7 hectares here. Mid-ruby colour, with lovely pure raspberry fruit on the nose and that trademark darker streak which, for me, sets Maladière apart.
The palate is perfumed and supple, with a saline line picking out the fruit flavours beautifully. 20% new oak.
Grape: Pinot Noir
