Te Whare Ra Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough 2022
Te Whare Ra, Marlborough
Te Whare Ra (TWR) is a small vineyard and winery located in the Marlborough sub-region of Renwick. The 11Ha vineyard was first planted in 1979 and since 2003 has been owned by winemakers Anna and Jason Flowerday. Yields are kept low, the vineyard is managed with a combination of organic and biodynamic practices and all the fruit is handpicked and hand-sorted. The wines are made with minimal intervention in a small winery which has been specifically set up for small-batch winemaking.
While TWR calls the Wairau Valley home, it sources 75% of its fruit from the cooler, windier Awatere Valley for this cuvée, which is likely responsible for the elderflower-like and citrus fruit character here. It also offers pineapple fruit flavors, nettles and a thiol-derived flinty element that lingers on the finish. One-eighth of the wine is barrel-fermented, giving additional weight and roundness to what is a light-bodied, fresh style. You can enjoy its precision and purity in youth, but there’s no hurry.
