Vouvray Brut ‘Blanc de Chenin’ Gilles Gaudron N.V.
Domaine Gilles Gaudron, Vouvray, Vernou-sur-Brenne, Touraine
Fourth generation Gilles Gaudron took over the family domaine in 1993. Comprising of 50 separate, small parcels of vineyards, the estate is planted on limestone-clay soils spread over 27 hectares with closely spaced goblet-pruned vines, the majority of which are older than 30 years of age and are hand harvested. Still aided by his father Sylvain, Gilles produces top quality, traditional Vouvrays with intense pure fruit characters and striking terroir expression. The atmospheric, naturally temperature-regulated cellars date back over 700 years and include 1,000 metres of tuffeau galleries. Fermentation is long and slow with natural yeasts. Vouvray Brut ‘Blanc de Chenin’: sourced from 20-year-old Chenin vines grown on tuffeau limestone/ clay. Manual harvest into slatted boxes, followed by slow pneumatic pressing, static settling at low temperatures during 24 hours, then fermentation at cellar temperature for 1 month. The wine is racked 3 times before second fermentation in bottles takes place in the cellar, ageing on racks for 15 months, riddling and disgorging. Dosage 8g/L.
Gilles Gaudron’s Vouvray Brut ‘Blanc de Chenin’ is made by the Traditional Method (the same method used to make Champagne) using 20 year old vines planted on limestone-clay soils. With its crisp acidity, complex, biscuity character and fine, persistent bubbles, this sparkling Chenin Blanc would make a great alternative to Champagne.
